QUEENS ROAD BAPTIST CHURCH
MINUTES of the
CHURCH MEMBERS' MEETING
Minutes of the Church Meeting held
17th September 08

Members Present……58 Apologies……27

Chairman: Rev. Stephen Cave

Devotions (Samuel) Samuel opened the meeting with a short reading from Judges 6:2-3, when the Israelites were being attacked by the Midianites. The Israelites made hiding place in the mountains, rocks and caves for themselves. The Angel of the Lord came to where Gideon was threshing wheat in a wine press - probably he was hiding too! When the Angel addressed Gideon as a mighty 2warrior", he replied that he could not possibly be that - he was the least in his family, who were the weakest clan. God saw Gideon's potential, and he went on to win a mighty victory for God's people. Have we anything on our minds at the moment? Are we afraid of facing up to something, or dealing with it? We too can be mighty warriors, because we have God on our side. Samuel prayed about this.

Minutes (Stephen, in Graham's absence) The minutes of the meeting held on 16th July were approved by the membership after noting that in the July meeting Rhodri referred to the 10% as the starting line for giving, not as the end of giving. The Chairman duly signed them.

Office Manager Position (Roy) Lynn has now moved on to pastures new and we are grateful for all she has done. Following last month's agreement to offer Di Jones a paid position, she will be combining this within an office manager's role, working alongside Sue King who will have a few extra hours each week. It will be three or four weeks before Di officially begins, as she has to give a months notice.

Building Project Latest (Terry) The Planners meet on October 15th. Stephen will be speaking on our behalf. On 14th October, a number of special prayer times will be available: 10.30-11.30am; 3.30-4.30; 6.30-7.15 & 8.00-9.00pm. Last Friday we had a very good quiz evening, raising £200-£250 and we have a special Christmas one coming up, date to be announced in due course. Terry then handed over to Brian who told us we have to keep on giving and looking at different ways we can help. We may be having a "Give & Take" Christmas Sale similar to the last one we held. Please support the Three Choirs & bring along friends & neighbours if possible. Brian played us, on tape, a sample of what we would be hearing at the Winter Gardens.

Membership (Stephen) We had two applications for membership as follows: Niki Wharlley visited by Mark & Helen Furlong; Janice Taylor visited by John & Janet Rew. Reports on the visits were heard and it was agreed that they should both be received into membership, and both were prayed for by Gill & Sue.

Appointment of Officers (Stephen) At present, our Church Secretary is Graham Beckwith & our Church Treasurer, Roy Corker. Both are happy to stand again and it was unanimously agreed that they would both serve for a further term. Stephen thanked God for them both.

Update on Tuesday Fellowship (Beryl Daulby) Beryl reminded us that we meet on Tuesday afternoons as stated in the Bulletin and also emphasised that this is not simply a women's meeting - men are very warmly welcomed. John Wilson is a very regular attendee and Norman Waghorn as Treasurer also attends. We have a variety of interesting speakers; the meeting is usually devotional in content. There is also time for a cup of tea and fellowship. This session will include speakers from Gideon's & MAF. We also have garden parties during the summer. We are starting next week with Samuel Hearle as speaker. About 15 attend regularly, but age & infirmity have sadly depleted our numbers, so we would be delighted to see more coming along. Dorothy from St Lawrence Church is now our regular pianist. Beryl mentioned some of the speakers that we have, such as London City Mission, SASRA and the Leprosy Mission. We also support an elderly couple in Uganda by sending them 30 per month - we sent a little extra recently to repair their roof, which was not waterproof!

Messy Church (Rhodri) We have been doing this for about a year now, mostly serving young, unchurched families. Rhodri said it was very encouraging that the Home Groups were willing to help with washing up, clearing away etc. & hoped they would do more. This month we are looking at the story of Abraham & Sarah. Please keep praying for Messy Church. Uganda Update (Stephen) Global Challenge felt it important that someone goes to keep an eye on the projects; Paul Eastwood, Stephen and Anne will be going there for a week in November.

Stephen closed the meeting in blessing & prayer.
